First Eucharist Candidates - A note from Father Scott

St Augustine Parish

To ALL candidates and their families of “first” Eucharist…
Christians around the world this year experienced the unthinkable: Easter season without Eucharist. The most sacred of celebrations in the Christian calendar occurred right at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in Canada, and so our "Easter duty" this year was to stay at home.
For Catholics in particular, the Eucharist is our deepest means of encounter with the Risen One: the crucified Son of God whose final victory over death is the heart of the Easter message. The Eucharist is the food of our souls as well as our bodies. It is the source and summit of everything we are and hope to be as baptized Christians. And this Easter we must go without it.
How is this possible? How can we go on being a eucharistic people, indeed an Easter people, without the Lord's Supper?
When I look and gaze upon those little sheep on the side wall of our church; here at St. Augustine’s under the Good Shepherd.  I know there are many in the parish who have chosen a name and praying for that candidate for ‘first’ Eucharist.
When will we know you can celebrate the “first” Eucharist; to have Jesus in your hands and say “Amen”.  I don’t know. Hopefully in next weeks we may know, perhaps in June or over the summer. If the authorities relax the guidelines for self-isolation there may be a chance in “small groupings’’ here at Church. “stay tuned”
Let us take this time of Easter til Pentecost, May 31 to pray for each other.  Let us continue to wait and pray some more, go over some of those great stories that you learnt about Jesus.   It is a blessing to know He does not leave us alone; He thinks of us all the time.
May God Bless you and hold you in the palm of His hand…
