In Language, we are beginning on procedural writing.
The students will be expected to expain "How to do ......"
Today we began the unit by explaining steps on how to
make popcorn.
Coming up in Math:
What Are Doubles?
Doubles result when adding a number to itself.
The double of 3 is 6 since 3 + 3 = 6.
The double of 9 is 18 since 9 + 9 = 18.

A fun way to see doubles is to use a mirror.
You can see the double of 4 by putting 4 counters in front of the mirror,
then counting both the real counters and their reflections.

Relating Other Addition Situations to Doubles
Sometimes when you know one thing, it can help you figure out something else.
For example, if you know that 3 and another 3 makes 6, then you can figure out
that 4 and 3 would look the same as 3 and 3 and 1 more, so that must be 1 more
than 6, which is 7.

3 and 3 and 1 more
Adding this way is sometimes called a doubles plus one strategy.
If you know that 4 and another 4 makes 8, then you know that 3 and 4 is 1 less, so it must be 7.

4 and 4 less 1
Adding this way is sometimes called a doubles minus one strategy.
Helping Your Child With New Words
Since a double means two of the same thing, you might relate it to pairs of socks,
shoes, or mittens.
Helping Your Child
It is useful to casually practise doubles with your child when you are together and things
are not busy. You could ask, for example, “What is the double of 4?” or “What is 3 + 3?”
Definitions
double: the result when adding a number to itself; for example, 8 is the double of
4 since 4 + 4 = 8
doubles plus one: a strategy for adding two consecutive numbers (two numbers
that are 1 apart), where you double the lesser number,
then add 1 more
doubles minus one: a strategy for adding two consecutive
numbers (two numbers that are 1 apart),
where you double the greater number, then subtract 1
Facts for 10
The pairs of numbers that add to 10 can be modelled using two colours of counters on a
10-frame.

Notice that 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, and 5 + 5 are all combinations for 10. The number
pairs that add to 10 are helpful facts to remember.
Relating Facts for 10 to Other Facts
When you know the pairs of numbers that add to 10, it is easier to add when the total is
more than 10.
For example, knowing that 7 + 3 = 10 helps you with 7 + 6, which is just 3 more than
7 + 3. That’s 10 and 3 more, which is 13.

This is helpful because 10 + 3 is what 13 means.
Helping Your Child
It is useful to regularly (but informally) ask questions such as “7 fingers are down.
How many fingers are up?” or “How many more do I need for 10?”
Definition
make-ten strategy: a strategy for adding two numbers where one number is
decomposed so that one part can be added to the other part to make 10
